Driver facing homicide charge after speeding over 120 mph seconds before fatal crash: police
WELLS COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA/Gray News) - A driver in Indiana is facing additional charges for their role in a deadly high-speed crash from earlier this year.
Authorities in Wells County said Hunter Cooper, 21, has been charged with reckless homicide, along with involuntary manslaughter, criminal recklessness and reckless driving for a crash that killed a 19-year-old.
According to Indiana authorities, Cooper hit speeds of nearly 125 mph on County Road 200 West prior to losing control of the BMW he was driving on April 5.
The vehicle ended up crossing the center line, crashing into a utility pole and rolling into a field.
Indiana State Police said an accident reconstruction report found Cooper’s vehicle had a recorded speed of 124 mph 2.5 seconds before impact.
Cooper was injured in the April crash and taken to a hospital. Two passengers were also in the vehicle.
Anthony Dalley, 20, was ejected and taken to the hospital. Gavyn Orlando, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies said Cooper had told them at the scene that he was going about 60 mph when he drove over a little hill and lost control of the vehicle.
Investigators said a toxicology report showed no signs of alcohol or drugs when it came to Cooper.
Multiple agencies responded to the crash and assisted in the on-scene investigation.
