BLOOMINGTON (25News Now) - Ahead of President Donald Trump’s military parade in Washington, D.C. marking the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary, protests were held nationwide on Saturday, including in Downtown Bloomington.

Hundreds gathered on the lawn of the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts for the “No Kings” protest Demonstrators said they’re against what they call the president’s authoritarian behavior and corruption. They said events in the last few weeks are an example.

“One of the issues is immigration, and how immigrants are being treated, and we believe along with Gov. Pritzker that immigrants should be treated with empathy. We don’t see that happening right now,” said Jodie Slothower, a leader with Voices of Reason, one of the groups that put together the event.

Organizers encouraged people to bring signs to express their opinions on national politics, and to keep the event peaceful.
