Wife accused of poisoning veterinarian husband with euthanasia drugs to steal his assets

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV/Gray News) - A woman in Wisconsin is accused of poisoning her veterinarian husband’s coffee with euthanasia drugs.

The case started after the couple married in March of 2022, WMTV reported.

Court documents stated that 51-year-old Amanda Chapin allegedly forged the signature of one of her husband’s children on a power-of-attorney document.

Chapin then demanded that her husband amend his house deed so she would get the home if he died, WMTV reported.

The criminal complaint stated she poisoned her husband for the first time less than three weeks after the quitclaim deed on the house was authorized.

Authorities believe that Chapin used animal euthanasia drugs that she stole from her husband to spike his coffee at least three times between July 2022 and August 2022.

The third time, he drank the allegedly poisoned coffee and fell into a coma that lasted four days, the complaint said.

Blood work showed barbiturates in his system, which is a drug he used to euthanize animals.

Chapin was charged with first-degree recklessly endangering safety. Chapin pleaded no contest to the charge and will be sentenced on July 25.

She originally pleaded not guilty in March of 2023 to a charge of attempted first-degree intentional homicide.

Gary Chapin’s son subsequently filed a restraining order against Amanda Chapin on his father’s behalf, and Gary Chapin has filed for divorce, according to online court records.
