BARTONVILLE - This week, I’m looking for some good food and a great vibe. There’s a spot here in town serving up both, and it is one of my favorite places to hang out.

Loren Peacock has lived in Bartonville his whole life, and when he decided to open Peacock’s Pub nine years ago, he brought his closest people along for the ride.

“My brother-in-law is the manager, our bartenders and servers are all family or friends,” Loren said. “A small-town place where everybody knows everybody, and good food at a fair price.”

At Peacock’s, a spacious dining room on one side meets the bustling bar on the other. But it’s the massive menu that brings it all together.

We’re treated to some of the most popular plates, starting with a dynamite appetizer: Buffalo Chicken Nachos piled high with hot sauce and ghost pepper cheese.

Next up, it’s a trio of entrees. Loren tells me I have to try the shrimp tacos, and I’m glad I did. They are tasty and tender, and highlighted by some delicious homemade spicy ranch sauce.

The tortilla trend continues with the sensational “Schwindy” wrap - named after a local football player. It is loaded with prime rib, fried egg and tater tots.

Finally, I’m in the mood for a good old burger and fries... with some extra cheese... and some bacon... all in one pile. I’ve had a lot of crazy burgers on the show, but this one might take the cake.

If you still aren’t convinced, Peacock’s has a long list of savory sides, including a house favorite - fried cheese balls.

This spot has a one-of-a-kind vibe and a second-to-none staff. Families are encouraged to dine, and they treat you like one of their own.

“You can go sit at the bar and (have) it be a sports bar, or you can have your family in here. It’s kind of a doubled-edged place,” Loren said.
