You Gotta Eat: Lola’s
PONTIAC (25 News Now) - On this show, we love a unique treat, and there’s a spot here in town serving quality cuisine you won’t find for miles.
Owner Anna Hoerner was exposed to great food at an early age, and after culinary school, she knew Pontiac was a perfect place to open Lola’s.
“My mom is from the Philippines, so growing up, it’s really been apart of my life, my entire life,” Anna said.
In Filipino, “Lola” means “grandmother”, and here, they hold that to heart, serving up hearty, homestyle plates.
“The more people that I can introduce my culture to - my mom’s culture to - the better,” Anna said.
Lola’s menu is inspired by street food and share plates. Anna shows us how some of them are made, starting with her most popular: tasty, tender pork skewers.
Next up is a popular noodle dish: “Pancit”. It can be made a ton of ways, and Anna has her own preferred method.
They say if you eat pancit on your birthday, it’ll bring you long life. My photographer Lakeisha got to try this one on her special day!
The plates keep coming, like tasty popcorn chicken served with homemade sauces: banana ketchup, bang-bang sauce and Anna’s secret sauce, just to name a few.
Plus, I got to try some pork lumpia - crispy, crunchy eggrolls that are considered a Filipino party favorite.
Anna says when you come in, she wants you to enjoy the food and soak in the friendly atmosphere. And with a menu this unique, it’ll be easy to come back.
“It’s up to me to make sure I put a good impression on you, and you’ll come back and try something different maybe next time,” Anna said.
