SPRING BAY (25 News Now) - This week, I’m right along the lake looking for some food with a view, and there’s a spot here in town serving up hearty, homemade favorites.

Scott Sheets has spent most of his life by the lake - and in restaurants. Earlier this year, he combined both experiences and teamed up with friends to open Sheets Creek Saloon.

“We decided to do a little spin-of of Sankoty (Lakes) and bring Spring Bay back to a little more life,” Scott said.

At Sheets Creek, they’re serving cool comfort plates inspired by secret family recipes, all with a scenic lake view right outside.

I hear they’re known for the fried chicken, so we start there. The recipe remains a secret, but Bill, the head chef, does show us a little of the prep process.

“Bill has his own ingredients in it, and it’s been pretty popular,” Scott said.

Bill throws half a chicken into the fryer, and when it’s time to taste, each part packs its own powerful flavor.

I pair it with some of the crispiest, flakiest walleye I’ve ever tried. This is a combo fit for the fried food fanatic.

The plates keep coming. Next up is a delicious double smash-burger with cheddar jack cheese. Alongside it: a juicy homemade tenderloin.

It’s hard to choose a favorite in the battle of the buns, so we’ll just call it a draw.

I get to try several sides too, including cheesy potatoes au gratin, and homemade chicken noodle and beer cheese soups. The options here are endless.

Scott says when you’re up Sheets Creek, all you need is good food and good company.

“You gotta have good food, or they won’t come back. So far, we just keep striving to be better every day,” Scott said.
