Since its start in 1953, WEEK has used the power of its airwaves to promote the public good. From public service announcements to telethons, serving the community has always been the heart of this station.
When WEEK-TV signed on for the first time 70 years ago, it made a commitment to serve the community. And that included its commitment to forecasting the weather and warning viewers of severe weather.
70 years ago – on February 1st, 1953 – WEEK-TV became the first TV station in Central Illinois. It was a new way for people to “see” the news in their community.
WEEK aired shows from three networks: NBC, CBS and Dumont. Because there wasn’t yet a way to air them live to the Central Illinois audience, they were broadcast on a one-week delay (that’s if the shows didn’t get lost in the mail!)
