Peoria celebrates re-opening of iconic venue
City leaders say the location could draw people in from across the area.
PEORIA (25News Now) - A well-known space near Peoria’s Riverfront is now open once again.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to mark The Gateway Building being open once more. The building now managed by Childers Catering had been a popular venue to host celebrations, weddings and corporate gatherings.
The inside of the building was given more modern touches, and those who chose to host their events there can light up the Murray Baker bridge with the colors of the event.
Peoria City Councilman Chuck Grayeb, who remembers what the building looked like decades ago says the renovations could bring plenty to the River City. “Thankfully the City of Peoria was smart enough to realize that it was to its advantage to team up with them to lease out this beautiful, beautiful space. Obviously, it’s just going to be spectacular with the views, and I think it will be a magnet for people to have events here from all over Central Illinois.”
The Gateway Building first opened in 1997 during an effort to revitalize the Riverfront, but the location’s history dates back to the late 1600′s.
