No. 23 Illini rally to down Valparaiso 87-64 in Roger Powell’s return to Champaign

(25News Now) - Friday was a homecoming of sorts at State Farm Center in Champaign. Former Illini basketball star Roger Powell Jr. returned to his college home as head coach of Valparaiso as the Beacons took on the Illini. Despite trailing 45-38 at halftime, the Orange & Blue outscored Valpo 49-19 in the second half to spoil Powell’s return and pick up an 87-64 win. Terrence Shannon Jr. led the way for the Illini with 22 points as they move to 3-1 on the season.
The Illini have another quick turnaround coming up. They’ll host their third game in six days on Sunday when they welcome Southern U to town for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
