PEKIN (25News Now) - Lori Hughes has been teaching students with behavioral and emotional disorders for 18 years - six of those at Edison Junior High School in Pekin.
Her classroom is a little different because it comes with a kitchen.
She teaches all subjects in a self-contained classroom - math, language arts, science, social studies and advisory - a social skills time, along with strategic reading.
When students earn enough points, they are rewarded with time in the kitchen.
“They love food and it’s a life skill that they’ll need in the future,” Hughes said. “They work hard to earn it and they do a fantastic job.”
