(25News Now) - The final Saturday of September was a surprisingly hot one for Central Illinois high school athletes. In cross country, Peoria High hosted a final tune-up at the home of the IHSA State Finals at Detweiller Park. Normal U-High’s Natalie Bierbaum finished 3rd in the Class 1A/2A girls race with a 3-mile school record 17:01.90. The Pioneers boys were second as a team while Morton’s Josh Weeks finished 3rd in the Class 3A boys race.

At Elmwood, the Trojans hosted their annual cross country invite. In the girls race, Eureka’s Meika Bender was the individual champ as the Hornets won the team title. In the boys race, hometown kid Isaiah Hill of Elmwood was the individual winner and led the Trojans to the team title by one point over Eureka.

In volleyball, Pekin hosted their annual invite on Saturday afternoon. The defending champion IVC Grey Ghosts finished 3rd while the host Dragons finished 4th.

In tennis, Peoria Richwoods hosted their invite. Knights senior Julia Wojtowicz battled Dunlap’s Shikha Agarwal in the championship match of first singles and came away with the win 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6)

The Knights also hosted a big swim invite on Saturday.
