Governor Pritzker announces $41.5 million for communities serving asylum seekers
Illinois has welcomed over 15,000 new arrivals since August of 2022.
SPRINGFIELD (25News Now) - The Governor of Illinois is sending out financial support to the municipalities that are accepting and serving asylum seekers.
The $41.5 million can be used for shelter, food, legal support, health care and more.
Governor JB Pritzker chose communities in the Chicago land area, except for the city of Urbana.
It’s been more than a year since Illinois started receiving buses from Texas full of migrants from the southern U.S. border.
Illinois has welcomed over 15,000 new arrivals since August of 2022.
Municipalities receiving funding include:
- City of Chicago: $30.25 million
- City of Joliet: $8.6 million
- City of Elgin: $1.27 million
- Lake County: $1 million
- City of Urbana: $250,000
- Village of Oak Park: $150,000
The $41.5 million is coming from the general revenue fund to the Illinois Department of Human Services.
“Illinois is a welcoming state, and we have stepped up to aid asylum seekers who have undertaken a dangerous and trying journey to try and build a better life for themselves and their families,” said Governor JB Pritzker.
