PEKIN (25News Now) - A beloved military service dog from Pekin was honored Sunday after a successful year protecting American soldiers and serving alongside former Army Sgt. Ralph White.

Hundreds of people took part in IKAR’s processional from the Rescued Heart Animal Hospital to the cemetery.

Ralph White and IKAR served together overseas in the Army for a year before the pair was separated.

White spent years looking for IKAR and they were reunited about three years ago after IKAR retired.

Part of IKAR’s responsibilities included helping sniff out explosives to prevent them from hitting the convoys.

White says that thanks to IKAR’s keen sense of smell, he saved a lot of people’s lives in Afghanistan.
