PEORIA (25News Now) - The Dirndls and Lederhosen were on display at the “King of Fests.”

The German American Society celebrated Oktoberfest on the Peoria Riverfront all weekend.

Oktoberfest started as a wedding celebration back in October 1810 in Munich, Germany and now the long-standing tradition brings out hundreds every year.

Jeff Pulfer with the German American Society says it’s important to keep the celebrations of their ancestors alive.

”They started farms, churches and schools, and businesses. It’s important for us to remember them, the people who came over here and helped settle here and keep the traditions alive they brought with them.” Pulfer said.

Next will be the Schlachtfest! at Hickory Grove Park on Sunday, October 1st from noon to 8 p.m.
