(25News Now) - Illinois could not recreate the magic from their nine-overtime win over Penn State in 2021 on Saturday. The Illini fell 30-13 to the No. 7 Nittany Lions at Memorial Stadium in Champaign. The turnover bug killed any hopes the Orange and Blue had for an upset victory as three first-quarter turnovers and five overall including four interceptions from QB Luke Altmyer doomed the Illini. Illinois is now 1-2 through the first three weeks of the season as they turn their attention to hosting Florida Atlantic next Saturday.
After starting 2-0, Illinois State dropped their first game of the season on Saturday with a 14-13 loss to Eastern Illinois. The Redbirds took their first lead of the day with 4:04 to play in the fourth quarter on a Mason Blakemore touchdown but a missed extra point get them up just 13-7. EIU then drove down the field and scored the game-tying touchdown with 30 seconds to play and followed it up with the go-ahead extra point to hand ISU its first loss of the season. The Redbirds return home next Saturday for a noon kickoff against Lindenwood.
In Division III football, Illinois Wesleyan dropped to 0-2 with a loss to Wheaton while Eureka College improved to 3-0 with a wild 35-28 win over Rockford University.
