PEORIA (25News Now) - A new sign will welcome people to Peoria as they travel north from Southwest Adams Street into the city.

Peoria Public Works spokesperson Nick McMillion says the sign, located on SW Adams St. between South Oregon and West Nevada streets, was designed to beautify the area and to make one of the busiest entrances into the city more welcoming.

The sign is six feet tall and 14 feet wide sitting atop a brick base and illuminated by LED lights.

“We are excited to see Peoria’s newest welcome sign come to completion and be yet another beautiful highlight in our City,” Public Works Director Rick Powers said. “Public Works will be ambitious with the expansion of other welcome signs on other City corridors in the coming years.”

The sign cost $27,000 to design and install which was funded through TIF funds.

The Illinois Department of Transportation says over 18,000 vehicles pass by that location every day.

More signs are planned for the northern, eastern and western corridor entrances to the River City.
