Irish city celebrates 25 years twinning with Peoria
PEORIA (25News Now) - Back in 1998, the City of Peoria started a friendship with a new sister city in Ireland.
Clonmel is the city, and its leaders celebrated a 25-year-long partnership with Peoria.
Mayor Rita Ali welcomed several city leaders Wednesday afternoon.
Some activities both cities work on together include trivia at Jimmy’s bar in West Peoria and a book club between the two libraries, halfway around the world.
Clonmel’s mayor said the connection does have benefits.
“From a tourism point of view, it’s a great thing because so many Peorians come over to Ireland, and they travel down to us in Clonmel, simply because we’re twins with Peoria,” said Mayor Richie Molloy. “That’s meant a lot to the local economy.”
The celebration continued at Jimmy’s Bar on Wednesday evening.
