You Gotta Eat: Flingers pizza considered a work of art

BLOOMINGTON (25News Now) - The owner of Flingers Pizza Pub in northeast Bloomington wants his customers to sink their teeth into a masterpiece.

Tim Cummings has taken a roundabout path to owning this award-winning pizza place. He started working at Avanti’s when he was 17 and worked his way up to general manager.

“One of the things I learned there was just how much I enjoyed making pizza. Out of everything I did there, I enjoyed making the pizza. I mean it was an art to me to see a good-looking pizza come out of the oven,” said Cummings.

Cummings took another career path but found his way back to restaurants. He was in the process of buying this place when COVID-19 hit, and the bank put it on hold. It eventually all worked out.

“Obviously, they wanted to see how it did through COVID, and then it excelled all through COVID. There was so much pickup and delivery, they had the police out here directing traffic on this road,” Cummings said.

They tried the Carnivore - bacon, pepperoni, Italian sausage, Canadian bacon and ground beef.

The SuperFreak is the Carnivore plus green pepper, black olive, yellow onion and banana pepper.

They also sampled the Grill Master - smoked chicken, bacon and red onion and the Blackjack Mac - short ribs, mac ‘n cheese, jalapeno. Both of these pizzas have a barbecue sauce base.

Edgar and Andrew regret not trying Cheesebombs.

“The Cheesebombs we get all the time,” said customer Kierra Daniels.

“And they come with three different dipping sauces. You’ve got the Nacho Cheese, the Marinara and the Ranch, so to get all those different varieties, it’s pretty good.” said customer Desmond Boyd.

Cummings is proud of his employees and loves his customers who keep on coming back.

“Flingers is about craft. I mean both craft pizza - having the pizzas you can’t get anywhere else. About craft beer - we have 28 craft beers on tap at all times, Cummings said.

Flingers Pizza Pub, located at 1503 East Vernon Avenue in Bloomington, is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday till 11 p.m.
