UPDATE (5:15 p.m.) - Five people, including a Peorian, were taken into custody early Thursday after an overnight manhunt in rural McLean County, and four of the suspects may have been involved in an armed robbery Wednesday night at an Urbana car dealership.
Chenoa Police Chief Travis Cornwall declined to identify the suspects until prosecutors file formal charges. The chief said they were in a stolen 2012 Volkswagen sedan traveling 80 mph in 40 mph zone. They stopped in the middle of the road about a mile into Gridley and ran off, according to the chief.
Cornwall said three of the suspects surrendered without incident close to where they fled. The chief said the other two may have hopped onto a freight train to the El Paso area where officers found them walking along a road.
Cornwall said the Volkswagen was taken from an Urbana car dealer where WAND-TV reported a robbery occurred. The employee was pepper sprayed and threatened at gunpoint, according to the report.
Of the five suspects, the chief said four are from Champaign-Urbana and the other is from Peoria. Police have booked them in McLean County for possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting a police officer.
