PEORIA (25News Now) - With the warmer weather comes the construction season. We are already seeing that with the roads.

The Peoria Public Works Department is diving deeper into the cracks in the concrete with new technology to improve infrastructure.

The City of Peoria is paying $110,000 to hire a third-party contractor, Roadway Asset Services (RAS), to operate the van over the next month.

But the cameras do all the real work.

Nick McMillion, Communications Specialist for the Peoria Department of Public Works say the technology is “basically a database of which roads and streets we need to address in the future and recommend different roadway projects. It really helps us create and maintain better roadways throughout the system because year in and year out, roads change with the weather.”

According to the RAS’ website, 3D Laser Crack Measurement systems are used, then their team of experts can analyze pavement conditions, looking for tiny cracks and potential infrastructure issues called the Pavement Condition Index (PCI).

“When it drives around these pavement indexes, we’ll take those findings and determine which roads and which streets need a full-on reconstruction or whether it be a different type of pavement reconstruction in the future,” McMillion said.
