Fallen soldiers remembered at Springdale Cemetery

PEORIA (25News Now) -Volunteers planted American flags at the graves of fallen soldiers at Springdale Cemetery just ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

A flag was placed on Friday at each of the 1,000 graves at Springdale’s Soldier’s Hill.

This tradition started 30-years ago as veterans would mow the grass and decorate the cemetery for Memorial Day.

“It’s very important,” said volunteer Allen Harkrader.

“We don’t want any of these people to be forgotten, and in two remote areas of this cemetery, there are two Medal of Honor grave sites that we also decorate,” Harkrader said.

Volunteers also decorate the cemetery for Veterans Day in November.
