Peoria Police Department honors fallen officers
A gathering held during Police Week showed support for local officers
PEORIA (25News Now) - The Peoria Police Department honored those lost in the line of duty.
Officers past and present, loved ones and friends gathered at the memorial wall at Peoria City Hall to honor their service and sacrifice.
The annual memorial ceremony comes during National Police Week, when officers around the country are recognized and remembered for their service.
Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria says the outpouring of support matters for those wearing the badge.
“We often ride on the shoulders of those who were here before us. As important as that is, I think it’s important to also show the officers when the community comes out. The support that we have, the real support we have from our community is shown right here as well,” the chief said.
President John F. Kennedy declared the calendar week of May 15th as Police Week in 1962.
