Peoria celebrates ‘first’ first responders
April 9th through 15th recognizes those who receive calls to action.
PEORIA (25News Now) - This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. In Peoria, doors were opened to celebrate.
The Peoria Emergency Communications Center open house included a tour, allowing people to see how much work goes into dispatching for seven different law enforcement teams, twelve fire departments and three EMS agencies.
Tisha Anderson, the Center’s Operations Supervisor says dispatchers’ role is behind the scenes, but it’s just as important as the first responders who show up on the scene of an emergency. “Dispatchers are the first first responders. We’re not often seen but we’re always heard, and they should be better appreciated for sure.”
National Public Safety Telecommunicators week was established in 1982 but was made official in 1994 when Bill Clinton signed a presidential proclamation.
