PEORIA (25News Now) - Thanks to a generous donation from the local laborer’s union, the Peoria NAACP branch of ACT-SO students can now have some of their expenses paid for as they advance to the national competition.

ACT-SO stands for Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics.

It’s a program designed to help teens compete in different STEM-based categories against other teens from across the country and state.

The Laborers Local 165 says, they wanted to help the students with their accommodations on their journey and show their appreciation for the work the NAACP is doing in Peoria.

Matt Bartolo, the Secretary-Treasurer for Laborers Local 165, says this is a gesture as a “thank you to them for the work that they do day in and day out. Whether it’s visibly out on the front lines or behind the scenes. We also wanted to accomplish, with our contribution, to invest in our youth.”

The local competition in Peoria will be early this summer, and the winner will move on to the national competition in Boston.
