(25News Now) - New details on a plan to help low-income families in Illinois pay for diapers.
State Rep. Lakesia Collins (D-Chicago) wants to give families with kids three or younger a diaper allowance of $30 a month.
The plan would have the Illinois Department of Human Services offer qualifying families vouchers for the diapers through their women, infants, and children program.
IDHS believes vouchers would work best to make sure the money is being used for diapers.
“It is my intention to give access to families,” Collins said. “That’s why I brought this bill up in the first place because I struggled with diaper needs when I first had my children.”
The bill passed out of the committee on a 9-0 vote with the understanding the bill comes back to the committee with the next amendment.
