PEORIA (25News Now) - A local primary school principal could be the winner of a Golden Apple award.

Tuesday, Charter Oak Primary’s Kathleen Lopez Rodriguez discovered she’s now a finalist for the award given to those who show leadership excellence in education. The mission of the Golden Apple Awards is to inspire, develop and support teachers and school leaders across the state.

Lopez Rodriguez is now one of only six finalists from a group of 130 nominees. She says being a standout among her colleagues was a surprise, but also an extraordinary honor.

“For me, this kind of honor just gives me more encouragement to continue to do my best every day. If i can represent Peoria Public Schools in this way in the State of Illinois, I’m so grateful to have an opportunity to serve in that way,” said Lopez Rodriguez.

The awards will be handed out this spring along with a $5,000 cash prize.
