PEORIA (25 News Now) - Lane closures on West Glen Avenue between W War Memorial Drive and Glen Park Place are scheduled to begin Monday, March 6.

Peoria Public Works says the closures are necessary for preliminary pavement work for entrance accesses and crossovers as part of the Glen Avenue Reconstruction Project.

The first of two phases to repave and upgrade West Glen Avenue near Northwoods Mall is now underway

The road will be reduced down to one lane of traffic headed in both directions as crews begin to fix the street,

The City of Peoria’s Public Works Specialist, Nick McMillion lists some of the work being done, the new pavement, the new curb and gutter, the new storm, sewer and drainage improvements, the new pedestrian accommodations as well.”

Motorists will be able to see, road work beginning on Glen Avenue and some local businesses feel like they are going to be most affected by it like J+B Studio. They tell 25News they get a majority of their clients from walk-ins.

“When you have traffic here, people see the shop. If there’s no traffic, it’s going to be on walk-ins,” Bob Khoury says with the project expected to last the rest of this year, he’s concerned about maintaining his current clientele.

However, given the current condition of the road, he is glad the street is finally being repaved.

Upon completion, motorists will also notice more accommodations for walkers and a new sewer system.

The City of Peoria’s Public Works Specialist, Nick McMillion says, although it will be a minor inconvenience, it will pay off when it’s completed.

“We understand that no one really like construction as it’s happening. Please be patient with us it is a long process. We understand it can be trying at sometimes. Just be patient and at the end of the day, it’ll be a better road and system for everyone.” Explains McMillion.

The entire Glen Avenue Reconstruction Project will cost $12 million.

The closure of the passing lanes in each direction will last from 2-3 weeks, weather permitting.

The use of alternate routes is advised.
