Illinois survives double-overtime thriller, beats Michigan 91-87
CHAMPAIGN (25 News Now) - A packed State Farm Center crowd was treated to a senior-night thriller on Thursday night as Illinois survived double-overtime to beat Michigan 91-87 in the home finale.
Michigan scored the final seven points of regulation to force OT and the Illini did the same at the end of the first overtime, necessitating another five minutes of play where they outscored the Wolverines 10-6 to claim the win. Matthew Mayer led the way with 24 points for Illinois while Terrence Shannon Jr. poured in 21. Michigan big man Hunter Dickinson led all scorers with 31 points.
With the win, Illinois moves into a wild, six-way tie for second place in the Big Ten at 11-8 in conference games. The only team ahead of them is their next opponent. The Illini hit the road to take on conference leader and No. 5 Purdue on Sunday morning at 11:30 in the regular-season finale.
