IL lawmakers considering child tax credit for families

(25 News Now) - Families across Illinois are feeling the effects of inflation.

From food, to gas, to housing, prices of many things are increasing.

Some lawmakers around Illinois now want to give families relief in the form of a child tax credit.

The credit would give eligible families $700 manually for each child under 17.

The money can be used for groceries, school supplies, or whatever else a parent thinks they need for their child.

Any parent who earns less than $75,000 when filing taxes with a spouse or $50,000 for single filers is eligible.

Senator Robert Peters says that safe communities exist when people have what they need and that this policy is a way to help families get what they need.

If passed, supporters say the policy would help half the children in Illinois.

The bill is now before the senate.
