SPRINGFIELD (25 News Now) - Republicans in the Illinois Senate are introducing a resolution that would stop any attempt to create a progressive income tax in the state.

Wealthier residents would pay higher tax rates under the progressive system, but voters in 2020 rejected the idea despite support from Gov. JB Pritzker.

Senate Minority Leader John Curran (R-Downers Grove) said lawmakers should spend their time helping job creators and fighting for working families.

“Families have struggled coming through this pandemic. They’re still struggling with the effects of this pandemic. We need to provide relief and opportunity for those families and at the same time businesses. Small and mid-sized businesses especially have also struggled through this pandemic, and they’re still looking for that relief.

Curran said this should be a bipartisan issue, but no Democrats have reached across the aisle to join the GOP.
