UPDATE - Pekin City Council member Becky Cloyd is the mayor pro tempore and presided over Monday’ night’s council meeting, replacing Mayor Mark Luft, who resigned. Cloyd is one of three candidates for mayor in April election. Also running for mayor are Council member Dave Nutter and Tazewell County Treasurer Mary Burress.

PEKIN (25 News Now) - Pekin Mayor Mark Luft is resigning - effective 5:30 p.m. Monday.

He says he and has family has been offered a good opportunity but did not elaborate further.

“My family has been through a lot the last eight years and have been very supportive and patient with my drive,” he said in a statement to 25News. “It was an honor and a responsibility that I am proud that my community allowed me to do.”

“My heart will always belong to Pekin and to helping others and I will continue to do that in a different capacity.”
