Program offered to prepare students for cannabis industry jobs
NORMAL (25 News Now) - Heartland Community College, with its main campus in Normal, is planning to prepare students for careers in the cannabis industry.
The college’s board of trustees this week unanimously approved plans to offer a Cannabis Cultivation Certificate starting in the spring of 2024.
A college spokesperson said the program is being developed to meet increasing demand for jobs, with about 170 openings in Heartland’s district, mostly in Lincoln and Dwight.
Coursework will include growing processes and techniques, regulations and the supply chain.
“Upon completion of the certificate, students will be prepared for entry level positions within the legal cannabis industry,” college staff said in a report to the board.
Also, Heartland students will be able to choose cannabis studies as part of the two-year associate’s degree in agriculture.
