PEORIA (25 News Now) - Heartland Community College Board of Trustees unanimously approved the addition of the cannabis cultivation certificate this week.

The junior college will join nine other Illinois colleges that offer the certificate in the spring of 2024. The program will teach students the growing processes and techniques, in addition to regulations and the supply chain.

Heartland says there will be no on-site growing.

“With the addition of the certificate, we’ll be able to help prepare people for a job market that is growing and will be out there for many years to come,” said Public Information Director Steve Fast. “This is a highly regulated business, so we have to go through a number of steps in helping people understand those regulations.”

Heartland students will also be able to choose cannabis studies as part of the two-year associate’s degree in agriculture.
