PEORIA (25 News Now) - Habitat for Humanity has been building houses for veterans and their families for nearly a decade.

On Thursday, the next veteran family learned more about their home-to-be.

“So our scope is bigger than building homes,” said executive assistant Stephanie Leafgreen. “We believe everyone should be in a safe and affordable home in our community.”

This home will be constructed at Springfield Rd. and Mabee Avenue in East Peoria for retired veteran David Backes. He says the home beats his wildest dreams.

“It’s unbelievable. I had no idea that I would be chosen for it,” said Backes. “It’s kind of a shock, but I’m very excited.”

Backes and his wife learned about the new appliances and finishes that will be included in their new home.

The land for it was donated to Habitat for Humanity under one condition - That it would be used to build a house for a veteran family. This is the fifth veteran home project for the nonprofit.

They break ground in early spring with the hope of completion by Labor Day.
