PEORIA (25 News Now) - It takes a special person to make sure her students are ready for what lies ahead in the real world.

One teacher at Manual High School, is managing to do just that, for more than two decades.

“I just love kids, and they have the biggest hearts in Life Skills, they’re so thankful for everything and it’s fun everyday coming to work.”

Those words from Manual High School’s own Mrs. Getz.

For 23 years now she’s found ways to connect with her students, teaching valuable lessons.

“Right now we’re working on recognizing different coins and money, we go out in the community and make purchases…”

Following directions, buying products, money management, all come into play when it comes to the future preparations.

“Our main goal is that they will be self-sufficient in life and be able to live comfortably on their own or with a little assistance from a group home.”

Mrs. Getz was presented with a $1,000 check courtesy of 25 News and CEFCU, the timing couldn’t be any better.

“It’s such a wonderful surprise, our class is getting ready to open up a tee-shirt shop so this will be a huge help for us.
