East Peoria leaders approve Camp Street cannabis dispensary
EAST PEORIA (25 News Now) - The City of East Peoria will welcome another cannabis dispensary to the community following city council action Tuesday evening.
The council voted 4-1 to allow MRE East Peoria, LLC to open a dispensary in a former bank building, now vacant, in the 400 block of West Camp Street.
The only no vote came from Council member Mark Hill, who said he’s not opposed to a marijuana business, but he believes the Camp Street site is less than ideal. Hill
Officials conducted a study to determine the impact the dispensary will have on traffic.
“We expect the traffic volume to flow evenly during the day with many ongoing customers opting for online ordering and make an even quicker stop in and out,” the traffic study said.
Prior to the vote, the council amended the city’s zoning code to allow three cannabis dispensaries in the community, instead of two.
Michael Sutherland was the only council member against the change.
“I don’t think we should be making money off peoples’ habits,” Sutherland said.
However, Sutherland voted for allowing the dispensary on Camp Street, citing the landowner’s property rights.
“I have the right to disagree with it, but I don’t have the right to stop their freedom of purchasing or selling something,” Sutherland said.
