State Rep. Keith Sommer officially submits resignation, creating opening for remainder of 102nd General Assembly
(25 News Now) - 88th District State Rep. Keith Sommer submitted his resignation December 1 from the Illinois House of Representatives.
Tazewell County Republican Party Chairman Jim Rule says this creates an opening for the remainder of the 102nd General Assembly in Illinois - including the lame duck session that runs from around January 4-10.
The 103rd General Assembly begins after, which means those elected in the last election will be inaugurated and seated.
“It is critical we have someone seated in the 88th district for the Lame Duck session”, said Chairman Jim Rule of Tazewell County. “It is an active session where the people of this district which includes much of both Tazewell and McLean counties must be represented.” The Lame Duck session of the General Assembly is that session which meets for the last time after the election but before the new General Assembly is seated.
State law says vacancies created in the General Assembly must be filled within 30 days.
Leading the committee to appoint a replacement to fill the open seat are the Republican Party chairs of Tazewell and McLean counties.
That meeting will take place December 21 at 6 p.m. at the McLean County GOP headquarters to review applicant information.
Interviews will take place December 22.
