PEORIA (25 News Now) -The World Cup has just begun and Peoria soccer fans have a unique opportunity to celebrate.

Though it is usually closed on Mondays, soccer fans filled The Fox and Pub Cafe this afternoon to watch the U.S. battle it out against Wales. This is part of the British-themed Pub’s tradition of hosting watch parties for every U.S. or England match. They also opened early to broadcast the 7 a.m. match for England.

Owner Matt Rixner has been putting on watch parties since the 2010 World Cup. his pub has always drawn in a soccer crowd, but he especially loves World Cup season.

“Everybody’s rooting for the same team,” Rixner said. “There’s no better atmosphere, the camaraderie, the excitement.”

“It’s the best sporting event to me because everybody is rooting for the same team, across the whole country. Like, what other sport do you have that?” he continued.

Fans showed off their Team USA pride with scarves, hats, jerseys, and other memorabilia, bursting out into cheers when the team scored their first goal, and boos as they jeered a referee for not pulling a yellow card on a Wales player.

The match ended in a draw, each team scoring one goal.

Friday will be the first World Cup Match for the U.S. and England since 2010. Rixner is hoping for a big turnout.
