PEORIA (25 News Now) - Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood has identified Elsa Veronica Quintero-Barriga, 50, of Peoria, as the victim Saturday of the city’s latest homicide.

According to Peoria Police spokesperson Semone Roth, officers were called to West Montana around 8:30 p.m. Saturday for a 911 call of a burglary in progress and shots fired. A woman was found inside a home when officers arrived with apparent gunshot wounds. She later died at the emergency room, and the autopsy is still in progress.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says that this case is also unusual, as homicide victims in Peoria are historically younger males. Harwood adds it was unexpected seeing a woman in her 50′s killed in this way.

“If we look at the epidemiological data across nationwide data, we’re really near nationwide data with the ages 14 to 24 being the second leading cause of death for that age group,” he notes.

A community member we spoke to that wishes to remain anonymous says Quintero-Barriga lived with her son at the home where it happened, and would often see groups of boys around her son’s age visit. The victim would share items she got at the food bank, and distribute food to others on the street.

At this time last year, there were 31 homicides in Peoria, on track to mark the city’s deadliest year on record. This death is the 24th for 2022. Harwood attributes that to more robust efforts by the city’s police department to create visibility and presence, but he adds it’s not a problem that can be fixed overnight.

As of now, there’s no suspect information available.

Harwood says the autopsy is still in progress.
