PEORIA (25 News Now) - Every family who showed up to get a turkey and dinner Sunday at the Peoria Friendship House was able to receive one.

114 turkeys were given out along with sides of food to complete a Thanksgiving dinner inside each paper bag given out that was hand decorated by children at the Goodwill Council.

Inside were handwritten notes of gratitude made by kids at Glen Oak School and the Children’s Hospital of Illinois.

Organizers say that by having the children a part it brings them a sense of community.

“Even the kids feel involved. kids are actively handing out food,” said Peoria Friendship House CEO Marcellus Sommerville. ”I think it gives us all an opportunity to come and give back to the community and see the impact that Peoria Friendship House is having on the community.”

The women of the Nu Pi Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority volunteered to help hand out food and stuff the bags.

All the turkeys were gone in less than two hours.
