SPRINGFIELD (25 News Now) - The superintendent of the Illinois Board of Education is has announced her retirement after guiding Illinois schools through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Carmen Ayala has been the superintendent since 2019. She’ll retire after a 40-year career in education when her current contract with the state expires January 31, 2023.

Her efforts won praise from Gov. JB Pritzker.

“Not only did Dr. Ayala’s steadfast leadership guide our schools through an unprecedented pandemic, but she also kick-started students’ academic recovery,” said Pritzker.

“Under her leadership, we’ve seen significant growth in high school graduation rates and other key educational metrics, a true testament to her hard work and dedication to Illinois students,” the governor said.

Ayala is the first woman and first person of color to serve as permanent superintendent.
