NORMAL (25 News Now) - The 2022 YICU Awards and the Youth Global Citizen Graduation were both held at Heartland Community College on Sunday.

Both programs work to develop leadership skills and encourage teens to raise money to give back to non-profits in their community. 11 of the teenagers recognized raised $12,000 for their respective charities combined.

One of the winners says he works hard in his community because as a kid, he wanted to be a part of something bigger.

“Seeing my peers that had access to some of those opportunities as kids, and how they have developed and grown. And my goal has been to give those kids those opportunities so they don’t have to feel like me and feel left out, and they can feel like they are making the most of their place in the community,” says Shrikar Chennuru, one of the 2022 YICU Service Award Winners.

Each student received a certificate from the Illinois House of Representatives and lawmaker Dan Brady, honoring their hard work during this past year.
