TAZEWELL COUNTY (25 News Now) -There’s a new top prosecutor in Tazewell County for the first time in nearly three decades.
Kevin E. Johnson has served in the office since former State’s Attorney Stu Umholtz announced he would be moving to a seat behind the bench in June.
Johnson now moves from appointed to elected at the state’s attorney’s office.
Republican Johnson’s only challenger was Libertarian Gabe Casey.
Johnson received a recommendation and endorsement from previous State’s Attorney Umholtz upon his resignation.
Umholtz served as State’s Attorney since 1995 and now sits as resident Circuit Judge in the 10th Judicial Circuit.
The term for State’s Attorney is two years. In order to seek re-election, Johnson must run again in 2025.
