Public transit systems offer free bus rides on election day
BLOOMINGTON (25 News Now) - Connect Transit, Bloomington-Normal’s public transportation system, is offering free rides on Election Day, just like what’s being offered for passengers using Greater Peoria Mass Transit on Tuesday.
Connect Transit is continuing its tradition of not charging fares on election days, hoping to reduce barriers for voters to get to the polls.
In a news release, the bus service cited 2021 research showing a lack of personal transportation reduces voter turnout by 20%.
“We believe it is our responsibility to provide public transportation to provide better opportunity for those that wish to exercise their right to vote,” Connect Transit said in a statement released Friday.
“Local voters can face various obstacles in their effort to exercise their right to vote. Transportation can be an important one among them. We appreciate operations like Connect Transit that do what they can to remove these obstacles,” Faith Russell, vice president of the League of Women Voters of McLean County, said in a statement.
Earlier, it was announced that riders of Greater Peoria’s CityLink fixed route service, CityLift paratransit service, and CountyLink rural transportation service won’t charge fares on Election Day.
