BLOOMINGTON (25 News Now) - A new bronze memorial plate is now on display at the McLean County Museum of History to mark the 25th anniversary of the original memorial for the veterans of World War II.

More than $80,000 was gifted to the museum to create the new bronze statue to bring more emphasis and raise the letters of the names of the 336 soldiers from McLean County who lost their lives in that war.

A memorial was first installed in 1994 but the names became hard to read over time.

The acting director for the museum Norris Porter says, this new memorial will allow those who walk past it a chance to remember the sacrifices made by their neighbors right at home, “When we forget our past, it’s not a good thing. What we are trying to do is lift up the honor for those soldiers that served and for those that are veterans and that are still with us and for those that are still serving today.”

Saturday’s ceremony included music from the Bloomington-Normal Concert Band, the reading of names, a veterans’ salute and included re-enactment soldiers.

25News spoke with one of those soldiers, who is also a high school history teacher and a former professor of history.

He says this is the chance for veterans to reconnect and be there for each other,

“I think this is a great opportunity for our veterans to come together and reminisce and talk about the things they have done and how we honor them,” explains Mark McBride with the 1st Special Service Force.

There are also two new markers on the southeast corner of the museum dedicated to the soldiers of the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.
