His colleague, 25 News Today’s Donnie Tillman calls Mattson “the hardest working man in Central Illinois.”

IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson released a statement:

“Having lived in the Peoria area for much of my life, I know firsthand the impact that Jim Mattson has had on high school sports in the region. His passion is contagious, and he treats every event he covers like the Super Bowl.”

Also receiving the honor this year are long-time Chicago-area sportswriters Jeff Bonato and Pat Disabato.

Mattson will receive his award in his hometown of Morton, at the Potter Dome before the Morton-Metamora varsity girls volleyball match, on October 4. The presentation starts at about 6:45 p.m.
