PEKIN (25 News Now) - A second Pekin City Council member wants to become the city’s next mayor even though the man currently holding the job has not formally announced his political plans.

Dave Nutter has been on the council since 2019 and chairs Pekin’s Infrastructure Committee.

Besides finishing infrastructure improvements, Nutter said his goals include continued revitalization of Downtown Pekin, encouraging more people to live downtown, reducing homelessness, and working with Tazewell County on the proposed Justice Center campus.

The other announced candidate is Council member Becky Cloyd, who serves as the city’s mayor pro tem. She announced her intentions in late August.

The incumbent is Mark Luft, who recently lost his bid in June’s Republican primary to retain his other elected post as representative in the Illinois House.
