EIU’s Hall of Fame football coach dies
(25 News Now) - Darrell Mudra, who led Eastern Illinois University to a national championship in 1978, has died. He was 93.
The Panthers had just one victory the season before Mudra led them to the NCAA Division II national title.
EIU, under Mudra’s guidance, advanced to the title game in 1980, but lost, and made it to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs in his final season at Eastern in 1982.
His record with the Panthers was 47-15-1, earning the nickname Dr. Victory because of his ability to turnaround football programs at several schools.
Mudra was head coach at Western Illinois University from 1969-73 before a short head coaching stint at Florida State from 1974-75.
Mudra’s resume included winning the 1965 national championship at North Dakota State. He also led programs at Adams State, Arizona, and Northern Iowa.
In 2000, Mudra was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
