You Gotta Eat: Haynes on Main
MACKINAW (25 News Now) - A hip spot in the downtown area has made a name for itself over the past decade, and it still continues to grow bigger and better.
Husband-and-wife duo Carol and Patrick Haynes opened ‘Haynes on Main’ about a decade ago. They were looking to bring some new spice to Mackinaw, which, at the time, was a bit of a “dry town”.
“We are the first-ever liquor-pouring establishment in the city limits,” Carol Haynes said. “We just wanted to open a real quality establishment - a big-city feel in a small town.”
They started with a small menu - only around five options. Fast-forward to now, a brand-new kitchen sets the tone for a long list of appetizers and entrees.
“The fries are always good and crisp, and the hoagie sandwich is one of my favorites here - besides their hamburgers,” diner Dan Schopp said.
“It’s just good home food, man. Kind of comfort food for us,” diner Dave Zeller adds.
So, into the kitchen we go to learn how head chef Mike makes some of Haynes’ most popular plates - starting with a delicious spicy tuna rice appetizer.
Next, we add some turf to the surf by trying Hayne’s famous ribeye - served with potatoes au gratin and fresh veggies, most of which are grown locally.
The steak cuts beautifully, and the tasty sides make for one awesome trio of flavors.
Haynes on Main also offers a ton of burgers, sandwiches and salads. Plus, it offers dozens of beer choices, which visitors can enjoy in the newly-installed beer garden.
“The floors are heated and it can be completely enclosed if needed,” Haynes said. “With the beer garden addition, we’ve doubled our seating capacity.”
Add on gaming, live music, and the occasional tasting event, and you get high quality meals in a hip setting.
Haynes on Main is located at 108 South Main Street in Mackinaw.
