Bloomington’s Brady is only statewide GOP candidate to win teachers’ union endorsement
BLOOMINGTON (25 News Now) - Bloomington State Rep. Dan Brady has won the support of the state’s largest union in his bid to become the next Illinois Secretary of State.
Brady is the only Republican seeking statewide office to gain an endorsement from the Illinois Education Association (IEA), which claims on its website to have more than 135,000 members.
The IEA Board of Directors announced this week that Brady is the union’s choice over former Democratic State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias in the contest to replace long-time Secretary of State Jesse White.
“Dan Brady has a long track record of supporting public education in his district. The IEA Board decided to recommend Brady for Secretary of State based on the strong relationships he has had for the past 20 years with both teachers and education support staff,” IEA President Kathi Griffin said in a statement to 25 News Now.
A spokesperson for Giannoulis declined to comment on the IEA’s support for Brady. However, Giannoulis’ website includes dozens of endorsements from organized labor, including the Illinois Federation of Teachers.
The IEA board endorsed Democrats for Illinois Governor, Attorney General, Treasurer, and Comptroller.
